Overview
Get Fit for Active Living is an eight week education and exercise program designed to introduce older adults to the benefits of exercise and an active lifestyle. The program consists of two aerobic exercise classes, one weight-training class and a one-hour education class each week. Participants learn how to get started on a regular exercise program, and about the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle for maintaining independence. Methods: quasi-experimental design, pre-post test. Results: These results suggest that at one-year, post-GFAL education and training, older adults have better exercise and physical activity adherence rates (64%) than those previously reported in the literature (51%).One-month follow-up data was available on 247 participants of which, 73% were still exercising regularly (physical exercise at least three times a week, for at least 30 minutes periods), 12% exercised sometimes, and only 9% were not exercising at all (4% due to health reasons). Implications: With a growing need for more physical activity programs for older adults the CCAA is implementing the GAL program both provincially and nationally.
