Overview

This nutrition program developed by community-based registered dieticians is based in 14 child care centres in Nunavik. The program was developed to address high rates of anemia and improve nutrition among children in daycare. Daycare meal plans are developed based on their nutrient content with particular attention to foods that are high in iron. Healthy meals (breakfast, lunch and snack) consist of traditional foods and healthy store bought foods. Cooks within each of the daycare centres are trained in meal planning, food preparation, budgeting and purchasing. A number of resources have been developed in English and Inuktitut for the program including a cook book for community families. The program is associated with improving nutritional intake and improving the likelihood of consuming a diet that aligns with the Canada Food Guide when children are in daycare. The program is supported by an overall policy on foods and beverages for the daycare centres that specifies types and quantities of foods to be served, staff training and nutrition education for children.
