Overview

Drop the Pop is part of a comprehensive, territorial health promotion strategy which aims to improve the health of school-aged children and their families through healthy eating and lifestyle choices including active living. It is an annual, month-long pan-territorial school-based health initiative that encourages youth to reduce their consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and increase their consumption of healthy foods. Students create visual displays, participate in special activities, receive awards, and incentives to encourage their involvement. The initiative started in Nunavut in 2003, and in 2011 was replicated in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. It has also been adapted by at least one First Nations community (James Bay Cree).

The intervention resulted in increased knowledge about good eating habits, as well as adoption of healthy behaviors among students, their parents and school-staffs including a decrease consumption of junk food and an increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. Overall the children reported eating more healthy foods and drinking less pop and sugary drinks. Moreover, some schools stopped selling pop and other junk food. An increased awareness among the community members of the impact of unhealthy eating habits was also noted. It was well-recognized that drinking pop contributes to lack of nutrients and poor dental health.
