Canadian Health Indicators

Public Health Agency of Canada

Chronic disease indicator framework

This Framework, developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, is a comprehensive pan-Canadian resource on the burden of chronic diseases and associated determinants. The Framework includes a core set of indicators and specific measures which are grouped into six core domains: Social and environmental determinants, early life/childhood risk and protective factors, behavioural risk and protective factors, risk conditions, disease prevention practices, and health outcomes/status.

In addition to a “Quick Stats” profile, this tool presents figures (bar charts) and tables with the pan-Canadian statistics plus data breakdowns by province/territory as well as by key demographic and socioeconomic variables and time trends.

The Framework tool is updated annually.

Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information

Health indicators framework

This framework includes 80 indicators measuring health status, non-medical determinants of health, health system performance and community and health system characteristics.

The indicators are produced at the health region level, as well as at provincial, territorial and national levels. Data used to calculate the indicators are the most recently available and represent a wide range of sources including the Census, surveys and administrative records.

Health Canada

Healthy Canadians: A Federal report on comparable health indicators

At the First Ministers’ Communiqué on Health in 2000, an agreement was made to develop a framework of health indicators that could be compared across fourteen jurisdictions in Canada. In 2003, health ministers signed the First Ministers’ Accord on Health Care Renewal, which stated each jurisdiction would report regularly on its health programs and services, health system performance, health outcomes and health status.

Health Canada’s indicator reports, published every two years, are the Government of Canada’s response to this commitment.

Pan Canadian Public Health Network

Indicators of health inequalities

This report is from the Population Health Promotion Expert Group of the Pan-Canadian Public Health Network. The purpose of the report is to identify pan-Canadian indicators that can be used to measure and report on inequalities in health and in key determinants of health in Canada. The Pan-Canadian Public Health Network is a network of individuals across Canada from many sectors and levels of government, who effectively work together to strengthen public health in Canada.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada

Measuring well-being: The community well-being (CWB) Index

The community well-being (CWB) index from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada is a means of examining the well-being of individual Canadian communities. Indicators of socio-economic well-being, including education, labour force activity, income and housing, were derived from Statistics Canada’s Census of Population and combined to give each community a well-being “score”. These scores are used to compare well-being across First Nations and Inuit communities with well-being in other Canadian communities over time.
