Overview
Projet pair-aidants is an adaptation from “Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training” (ASIST) by the Living Works organization developed in English and then translated into French and then indigenous languages. The suicide prevention initiative takes place in the First Nations or Innu community of Uashat mak Mani-utenam in the north eastern region of Quebec near Sept Iles. The objective is to build knowledge and skills in youth wanting to engage in youth suicide prevention, community “sentinels” (gatekeepers) or professionals/service providers working within communities. The program aims to train peer helpers and community professionals, develop knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to calls for help, increase confidence in providing care and identifying youth at risk. Training for this program is held over a two-day period led by an accredited trainer from the community that is under the supervision of an ASIST trainer from outside the community. Evaluation results have shown evidence of empowerment and confidence in helping youth in distress. There is also evidence of transfer of training to community with changes in professional practice, greater referral rates, and engagement with other community projects.
