Category Page: Organization (Creating supportive environments)

The interventions assigned this icon provide social environmental support which includes both institutional support (media – policy – work place – organizations – health services) and interpersonal support (community – region – neighbourhood – family – friends) as well as physical environmental support that is the provision of something concrete which is intended to enhance health or protect the public from environmental hazards in either indoor or outdoor environments. These initiatives can be as small as a sign giving hand washing directions or as large as a city wide active transportation system. Other examples are schools providing access to healthy food choices, workplaces furnishing physical activity programs, and communities building neighbourhood support centres. Regulations which control or reduce environmental contaminants such as smoking bans and the limiting the concentration of lead are also a type of physical support. Physical and social environmental supports are often intertwined and interdependent in their implementation.
